What Is Zen Connections?

Zen Connections is ZenPlay's free alternative to NYT Connections — one of the most played word games in the world with over 3.3 billion plays in 2024. The goal is simple: find the four groups hidden within 16 words. Each group of four words shares a common thread that connects them.

Six Game Modes

Choose from Classic, Sports, Pop Culture, or Geography themed word sets. For extra challenge, activate Speed Mode — a 60-second countdown — or Blind Mode, where category names are hidden until you solve them correctly.

Five Difficulty Levels

From Baby (6 allowed mistakes, no timer) through Expert (only 2 mistakes allowed, tight time limit), every level adjusts word complexity, time pressure, and hints available.

Start with the category you are most confident about — locking in an easy group gives you more information for the harder ones.
Watch for trick words that could fit multiple categories — the puzzle is designed with deliberate misdirection.
The purple group is always the hardest — often a pun, wordplay, or obscure connection. Save it for last.
If you see "One away" — you have 3 of the 4 correct. Swap out one word at a time to find the missing piece.
In Speed Mode, aim for the easiest groups first to secure points before the clock runs out.

What does One Away mean?

It means 3 of your 4 selected words belong to the same category, but one is wrong. Swap it out one word at a time to find the correct fourth member.

How many mistakes am I allowed?

It depends on difficulty: Baby allows 6, Easy allows 5, Medium allows 4, Hard allows 3, Expert allows only 2.

What is Blind Mode?
